The First Step

"The journey of a thousand miles starts with a single step." -Chinese Proverb

I'm sure the majority of people have heard that proverb before.  I thought the saying fit perfectly with this new blog that will focus on the great teaching we are seeing each week during the walk-throughs in the buildings throughout the district.  While contemplating the content of this posting, I realized there are many first steps to leading to this moment in time . . .
  • the first week of walk-throughs
  • the first attempt at a blog for all staff, in lieu of a traditional newsletter
  • the first pep assembly
  • the first full week with students
  • the first home softball game
  • the first home football game
  • the first newspaper club meeting
  • the first tutoring sessions
So, the journey begins with those steps for the 2009-2010 school year.  Our destination . . . improving student achievement through engaging learners in relevant and meaningful lessons.  During the walk-throughs last week, I was fortunate enough to see wonderful teaching and learning taking place.  I was especially encouraged to see that 100% of the classrooms we visited all had an environment that was safe and organized for student learning!  I imagine that is not the case in districts across the state!  We have a wonderful group of dedicated educators here, as well as a wonderful group of students.

The goal with weekly walk-throughs is to simply take a moment to reflect upon instruction, teaching, and learning for the observers as well as the instructors.  Many times we do not take the time we need to reflect upon our practices and pedagogy.  Through reflection and giving careful thought to the "what ifs" or "whys" comes an opportunity for each of us to grow and learn.  While reflection is a difficult process, over time it becomes a more familiar practice. Again, this step, though only one of many, will help us reach our destination.

  3. My favorite part of walk-throughs last week had to be in the classrooms when the teachers were really "connecting" their lessons to real-life issues to which those students could really relate. Talk about AUTHENTIC instruction! The engagement was high in those rooms...and MEANINGFUL!

  5. I had my first 'walk through' last week. I like the immediate feedback. The follow up questions make you think and the 'walk through' form lets you see the snapshot through someone else's eyes. I like the change.
